Building your teen’s GCSE English shelf

For parentsBuying guides

GCSE English Literature is built around a small number of set texts studied in detail — a Shakespeare play, a nineteenth-century novel, a modern text and a poetry anthology. Exam boards differ, so the first job is to get the exact titles and editions from the school before buying anything.

Buy the edition the class uses

For the poetry anthology and for annotated study editions, the page numbers and notes need to match what the teacher refers to. This is the one place not to improvise — check with the department first.

Own the text, do not just borrow it

Students who can annotate their own copy — underline, note in the margin, tab key scenes — revise far more effectively than those working from a library loan. Second-hand is perfect here; a marked-up used copy is a feature, not a flaw.

Support, used sparingly

  • One study guide per text is plenty — more just crowds the desk.
  • A plain reading copy plus a separate annotated edition beats one heavily-glossed book.

Where to look

Browse the KS4 range, and check used copies for the novels and plays — they are cheap and meant to be written in.
