A first bookshelf for a new baby (0–3)

Reading to a baby is about voice, rhythm and closeness long before it is about story. A small, well-chosen shelf read repeatedly beats a big one barely touched.

Board books that survive

At this age the book is also a toy. Thick board pages, rounded corners and a wipe-clean cover are the practical baseline.

What to look for

• Strong rhyme and rhythm — text that is a pleasure to say out loud on the fiftieth reading.
• High-contrast or bold illustration for the youngest babies; clear, uncluttered pictures after that.
• Repetition and a predictable structure a toddler can join in with.
• Touch-and-feel and lift-the-flap books once little hands want to do something.

How many

Six to ten is plenty to start. Rotate a couple in and out rather than buying in bulk — a toddler wants the same book again, not a new one.

Browse books for ages 0–3 and Foundation Stage. The under-£5 shelf is a good place to build the starter set cheaply.
